The Gastroenterological Department treats patients suffering from digestive tract disorders (oesophagus – stomach – small intestine and large intestine), liver, bile and pancreas. In collaboration with the Internal Medicine, the Surgery and the Laboratory Departments, it deals conservatively or invasively with conditions from the entire spectrum of gastrointestinal diseases.

At Mediterraneo First Care, we also pay great attention to diseases, which often do not require direct therapeutic intervention but rather a good patient- physician communication, a discussion to understand the nature of the disease and education on how to prevent symptoms.

Functional gastrointestinal diseases such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (which we often refer to as “sour or bitter taste in the mouth” or “heartburns”), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (often referred to as “spastic colitis”), Constipation, Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease are at the top of the list, along with other severe illnesses (such as myocardial infarction and cancers), that degrade the quality of life of patients, impacting on their ability to work and socialize.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men and women in Western societies and the second cause of cancer related death. Each person has a 5-6% chance of developing it during their lives and one in three will die of the disease.

As most colon cancers start off as polyps, prevention can be achieved by endoscopic colonic check and endoscopic polypectomy at Mediterraneo Hospital. In this way, their possible malignant transformation in the future can be avoided. The application of the innovative ESD (Endoscopic submucosal dissection) technique allows the removal of large polyps and endoscopic cancers.
